"April Morning
France 1918" by Frank Wootton.
In
April 1918, following
the suggestion of Lieutenant General Jan Smuts' Cabinet Committee, the
British
Government merged the Royal Flying Corps with the Royal Naval Air
Service to create the first independent air force in
the world, the Royal Air Force – or RAF. Major General Sir Hugh
Trenchard became the first commander of the joint service. Two of the
gentlemen
depicted in the Crossley staff car are Sir Hugh Trenchard and General
Smuts.
The aircraft are a Sopwith Camel and, beyond, several S.E. 5a's, the
two most
successful British fighter aircraft of WWI. Above them, returning from
a night
raid, fly two Handley Page 0/400 heavy bombers of the RAF.
Each print is signed by three of the
modern RAF's highest ranking officers: Sir Peter Harding GCB,
DSc, FRAeS,
CBIM, Marshal of the Royal Air Force
and Chief of the Defence Staff; Sir Michael Graydon GCB, CBE,
ADC, FRAeS, Air Chief Marshal and Chief of the Air
Staff and Sir John Thomson KCB, CBE, AFC - Air
Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Strike Command.
